Fleming tabbed as Bobcat Football Running Backs Coach

Staff Reports

SAN MARCOS – Texas State football has named fast-rising RJ Fleming as the running backs coach, head coach Jake Spavital announced.

Fleming has climbed the coaching ranks since his first role in 2015. He has ascended from graduate assistant to position coach, with stops at Eastern Michigan, Liberty, TCU, Trinity International and Arkansas Tech.

“Couldn’t be more excited to bring coach Fleming on board to coach the running backs,” said Spavital. “I’ve known coach Fleming for a while now, and I know he will be an asset for our program on and off the field. He played in the Sun Belt for some great coaches, so he is familiar with the layout of the conference. After playing, he has only excelled in his ability to recruit and develop student-athletes while coaching in some well-established program. We’re fired up to have him join us in San Marcos, and we know he will make an instant impact with our program.”

Fleming’s last stop was in Eastern Michigan as the wide receivers coach. He spent the 2021 season with EMU after serving as the offensive quality control coach at Liberty for two years.

In 2020 with Liberty, Fleming helped the Flames conclude the season ranked in the national polls for the first time in program history. Liberty closed out the campaign No. 17 and 18, respectively, in the Associated Press and Coaches Poll. The national attention was due in part to a high-powered offense that ranked 15th in the country with 482.7 yards per game. Fleming helped oversee a wide receivers group that averaged 13.1 yards per catch and scored 25 touchdowns.

In 2019, Fleming assisted Liberty in reaching a bowl game in its first season at the FBS level. He also helped tutor current NFL player Antonio Gandy-Golden, who was a 2019 Biletnikoff Award semifinalist and named a Phil Steele All-American.

Prior to Liberty, Fleming was an offensive graduate assistant with TCU. In his three years with the Horned Frogs, he was a part of a program that won 23 games and made three bowl appearances.

The Mississippi native is a product of the Sun Belt as he played wide receiver at Arkansas State from 2010 to 2013.

Fleming has appeared in eight bowl games in his playing and coaching career, with his most recent being the FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl with Liberty in 2020.

Fleming earned his bachelor’s degree from Arkansas State in 2014 and master’s degree from TCU in 2017.

With the hire, Texas State has completed its allotted 10-person assistant coach staff for 2022. The Bobcats are in the middle of spring practice, and will take the practice field once again for the third time this year on Saturday.
