F
orbes has named San Marcos the best city to retire in Texas in the magazine’s 2018 rankings, placing it ahead of San Antonio, the runner up in the list.

The magazine noted San Marcos’ quality of life and positive economic statistics, including:

  • Cost of living 13 percent below national average
  • High rank on Milken Institute list of best cities for successful aging
  • Doctors per capita at national average
  • Good air quality
  • Serious crime rate below national average

In compiling its list of the Best Places To Retire In Each State, Forbes compared data on more than 650 cities across the country, examining relative affordability, availability of doctors, the serious crimes rate, cities’ rankings on the Milken Institute list of best cities for successful aging, air quality, walkability and bikeability.

Forbes also considered the presence of colleges and universities because of the cultural amenities they make available to all residents of a community, including senior citizens.

San Marcos is no stranger to Forbes rankings. In 2015, 2016, 2017, and again this year, the City was named one of the top 25 places to retire nationwide by the magazine’s editors.
