SAN MARCOS, Texas – Former Texas State men’s basketball player Tony Bishop will be playing in the upcoming FIBA AmeriCup that takes place Aug. 25 through Sept. 3 in Argentina, Columbia and Uruguay. He will be representing Panama in the 12-team tournament.
Bishop completed for the Bobcats in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons. The 6-foot, 7-inch forward appeared in 62 games while starting 26 of them. He scored 640 points with 418 coming his senior season.
Overall, he made 53.2 percent of his shot attempts, grabbed 402 rebounds, recorded 61 steals and blocked 58 shots. Bishop helped lead TXST to 31 wins in his two years in San Marcos.
Panama was drawn into Group C along with the Dominican Republic, United States and Uruguay. The first group match for the Panamanian team is on Monday, Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. CDT against USA in Montevideo, Uruguay, where all of the groups games will take place. The 12-member USA squad will not be made up of superstars but mostly NBA G-League players and be coached by Jeff Van Gundy.
The other two games for Panama sees the team face the Dominican Republic on Aug. 29 at 4 p.m. CDT and Uruguay at 6:30 p.m. CDT.

The semifinals take place Sept. 2 and the finals and third-place game will be contested Sept. 3 in Cordoba, Argentina.
Also competing in the tournament are Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Puerto Rico in Group A and Argentina, Canada, U.S. Virgin Islands and Venezuela in Group B.
