Game Preview: Texas State Football takes on Louisiana Rajin’ Cajuns

SAN MARCOS – After suffering a 28-16 loss against Georgia State, Texas State Football (2-5 overall, 1-2 SBC) will compete against the University of Louisiana’s Rajin’ Cajuns (6-1 overall, 4-0 SBC) in Lafayette, Louisiana on Oct. 30.

Head Coach Jake Spavital stressed the importance of consistency and minimizing errors.

“We gotta match the physicality and we’ve gotta execute at a pretty high level because this team [Louisiana] doesn’t make mistakes,” Spavital said.

The Cajun defense will prove to be a challenge for the Bobcat offense. Undefeated, the Cajuns have a strong defensive line with a lot of depth that will be a big threat to the Texas State offense. The Cajun’s lead defensive solo-tackler is junior safety Percy Butler with 22 solo tackles. Junior linebacker Lorenzo McCaskill leads the Cajun defense with 27 assisted tackles.

Louisiana’s offense is also strong. Sophomore running back Chris Smith, leads the Cajuns offensively, averaging 6 yards per carry and almost 80 yards per game.

Texas State sophomore defensive lineman Jordan Revels says the defense will have to pay attention to detail and play physically.

“This week we need to improve on tackling and get those guys down,” Revels said.

Offensively, Texas State has depth at the quarterback level with senior quarterback Tyler Vitt, freshman transfer Ty Evans and sophomore Brady McBride. McBride has started and played every game in the 2020-2021 football season thus far. McBride averages about 60% pass completion rate.

Much like Texas State, Louisiana also has some depth at the quarterback level with senior quarterback Levi Lewis and freshman Chandler Fields. Lewis averages 62% pass completion, slightly better than McBride.

Texas State will need to move the ball effectively and execute plays consistently to play well against a tough Louisiana team.

The Bobcats will take the Cajun field at 11 a.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
