Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 to 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training.

SGA Donates to Hays Cares Shoes of Hope
The Gary Job Corps Center’s Student Government Association (SGA) donated $250 to the Hays Cares Shoes of Hope. The Hays Cares Shoes of Hope group was formed in partnership with Samaritan’s Feet, to help provide the children of Hays County with the essential need of a pair of shoes as they return to school.
On Saturday, August 3, 2019, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Lehman High School, the organization has planned a community event to serve over 300 students with a new pair of shoes and a pair of socks.
At the event, volunteers will spend time with each shoe recipient by washing their feet and placing the new pair of socks and shoes on everyone’s feet, all while offering encouragement and hope.
Free refreshments, health educational awareness, and some fun activities will be available during the event. Anyone interested in registering their child for a free pair of shoes, donating, or volunteering can find additional information at www.haysscares.org.
Catholic Charities Visit GJCC
Catholic Charities Archdiocese San Antonio visisted the Gary Job Corps Center (GJCC) this week. The Catholic Charities representatives toured the center to see about partnering with Gary Job Corps Center and how the center can provide for their community.
While touring the center they visited the following classrooms: English Language Learner (ELL) in academics, Certified Nurses Assistant (CNA) trade, and the Machinist trade. In the ELL classroom, one of the Catholic Charities visitors got to speak with GJCC student Jeannette Iriza (pictured) in her native language of Swahili. Jeannette has been in the program since July 2018 learning English and her CNA trade.
Caldwell County Commissioners donate for a memorial sign
Caldwell County Commissioner’s Court approved a donation of $650 to help purchase a memorial highway sign to honor Kristian Menchaca, a former Gary Job Corps Center graduate and fallen U.S. Army Private First Class that was killed following an insurgent attack on a U.S. Army checkpoint south of Baghdad, Iraq.
Once the sign is placed on Highway 21, there will be a ceremony to honor Private Menchaca and to debut the memorial highway sign.
Gary Job Corps Visits OHL Rodeo
The Gary Job Corps Center’s Overhead Lineman (OHL) class attended the 22nd annual Texas Lineman’s Rodeo Association (TLRA) on Saturday in Seguin, TX. The TLRA is a non-profit organization created to offer line worker’s in Texas a way to showcase their pride in the profession of high voltage line work.
The rodeo is a way for line worker’s friends, family, co-workers, and spectators to witness first-hand what their job is all about. For additional information about the OHL Rodeo see website http://www.tlra.org.
