Gary Job Corps Center Students Honor Flag, Volunteer, Firecracker 5k & Special Graduation

Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 to 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training.

The Job Corps program is authorized by Title I-C of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 (supersedes WIA 1998). For more information about the Job Corps program at a national level, please visit their Official Public Web Site.

Honoring Our American Flag

FEATURED PHOTO ABOVE: Gary Job Corps cadets along with the Honor Guard from the security and correction trades, carried out an American flag exchange ceremony. The American flag has a long history and is a strong symbol of American identity and national pride.

Cadets have been honoring our nation’s most iconic symbol of freedom for many years. The cadets felt privileged to show their skills at the ceremony and showcased what they have learned in their trade. Gary Job Corps wishes everyone a Happy Fourth of July.

Gary Job Corps Students Graduating with a Career

Gary Job Corps Center’s students are graduating with a career! Three correctional trade students graduated this week and have been placed in full-time employment at correctional facilities throughout Texas.

Kristian Brown will be going to the TDCJ Wallace unit, Michael Lewis to the TDCJ Allred unit, and Aliyah Alvarez will be going to the MTC Prison in Kyle.

“You may remember Mr. Lewis from when Hays County Commissioners Court proclaiming that January 15, 2019, as “Gary Corrections Cadet Michael Lewis Day” due to his heroic response in providing lifesaving first aid to a victim at Sights & Sounds,” said Rachel Garnes, Business Community Liaison Director for Gary Job Corps.

“Gary Job Corps Center is really proud of our students and can’t wait to see what they will do next! Sending out our best trained and “heroic” correctional officers,” said Garnes.

Firecracker 5k

Gary Job Corps Center’s students placed in the annual Firecracker 5K evening run at the Five Mile Dam Park, which is in conjunction with the Fourth of July Celebration.

Left – Placing in their divisions is: Robbie Rodriguez in 2^nd place, Estefania Gonzalez in 2^nd place, and Jonathan Torres in 1^st place.

Right – Michael Salinas (far right) placed 1^st in his division and 3^rd overall with a finishing time of 19:04.

HOPE Group Volunteering at Food Bank

The Gary Job Corps Center’s HOPE Group (Helping Other People Excel) volunteered their time at the Hays County Food Bank warehouse helping stock and load food into vans.

They also helped distribute food at the South Side Community Center, which is a distribution site for the food bank. 1 out of 7 Hays county residents are food insecure.
