Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 to 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training.
The Job Corps program is authorized by Title I-C of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 (supersedes WIA 1998). For more information about the Job Corps program at a national level, please visit their Official Public Web Site.
Students Receive Peer Mediation Training
The Gary Job Corps Center’s students have been given a special opportunity to be certified in peer mediation. Starting this week through the end of August, Central Texas Dispute Resolution Center, will be training and certifying 50 staff and students on peer mediation. Students will be learning to mediate their peers by learning to promote reconciliation, settlement, and/or compromise. For additional information see website http://www.centexdrc.org.

Gary Job Corps Center’s HOPE Group (Helping Other People Excel) volunteered at the Hispanic Business Convention of Texas at Embassy Suites. The volunteers got to visit with J.R. Gonzales, Executive Director of Buda Chamber of Commerce and Executive Vice-Chair of TAMACC.
Mr. Gonzales shared tips on business practices and how to conduct yourself during a business meeting. Volunteers also got to meet Robert Rizo, City Councilman of Kyle, San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson, County Judge Ruben Becerra, and VIP for the Women’s Empowerment Luncheon at the convention, Cecilia Conti from El Rey Network.

The Gary Job Corps Center’s Student Government Association (SGA) spent last Saturday volunteering their time for a great cause. SGA participated in the Hays Cares Shoes of Hope event by serving over 300 students who received a new pair of shoes and socks.
At the event, volunteers spend time with each shoe recipient by washing their feet and placing the new pair of socks and shoes. Free refreshments, health educational awareness, and some fun activities were available during the event. For additional information on the organization visit website www.hayscares.org.
