Goodnight Middle School Student Earns National Medal In Writing

More than 330,000 works of art and writing by students in grades 7-12 were submitted, placing Julia within the top 1% of all those students.

The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers notified Goodnight Middle School eighth-grader Julia Antu that her story has earned a National Medal in the 2017 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for her Flash Fiction piece entitled “Daddy’s Little Girl.”

She will attend the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Thursday, June 8, 2017, to receive her award.

According to the notification letter, the Awards have been recognizing creative secondary students since 1923.

More than 330,000 works of art and writing by students in grades 7-12 were submitted, placing Julia within the top 1% of all those students.

Past recipients have included Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Lena Dunham, and Paul Chan.

Julia was one of four Goodnight students who earned recognitions at the Central Texas level. Faith Phillips received a Silver Key Award for her short story; Briana Hernandez-Barrientos received a Silver Key Award for her personal essay/memoir; and Julio Trevino received an Honorable Mention for his short story. Julia received a Gold Key Award, and therefore advanced to the next level of competition. Their teacher is Crystal Kelley.
