Trustees for the Hays Consolidated Independent School District approved a lease with the Hays/Coldwell Emergency Services District (ESD) No. 1 for a two-acre tract of land to build a new fire station.
The new facility will provide emergency services to areas near State Highway 21 that include a new elementary school and new transportation facility near Uhland and Niederwald.
The lease, which will cost $1 a year, is a long-term agreement that calls for ESD No.1 to build the fire station within five years or the lease will be terminated, said Carter Scherff, chief operations officer for ESD No. 1. The area currently is served by the Kyle Fire Department, known as ESD No. 5.
