Hays CISD Announces Ribbon Cutting Ceremony To Celebrate Completion Of New Buda Elementary School Campus

On Monday, April 15, Hays Consolidated Independent School District announced the date of a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the New Buda Elementary Campus.

In 2017, Hays County voters approved a bond measure to build a new Buda Elementary Campus to accommodate advances in technology, changes in education building requirements and a growing student population.

Originally built in 1885, the new campus, located on Old San Antonio Road, marks the fifth incarnation of the school.

While built as an original two-story wood building, known as Buda School, in the late 1800s, a larger city was eventually required; in 1908, the 1885 building was sold and the elementary school was moved across the railroad tracks to a new two-story building with the first graduating class of six students receiving their diplomas in 1910.

In January 1928, the Buda High School building was destroyed by a fire. A new school was built on the site, preserving the arch and the inside walls of the old school.

In 1967, Kyle, Buda, and Wimberley consolidated their schools with one high school, and Buda High School became Buda Elementary.

The new Buda Elementary School campus will open in Fall 2019. To mark the school’s completion, Hays CISD will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 7 at 5:30 PM in front of the school, which is located at 1060 Old San Antonio Road.

The district is asking residents and former students to share their stories about the Historic Buda School on the district’s website and share their idea on what should become of the Historic campus.
