The Hays Consolidated Independent School District will officially open Uhland Elementary School on Saturday, August 11, 2018, at 10:00 a.m., with a ribbon cutting ceremony that pays tribute to the historic and extraordinary legacy of the school’s namesake – the original Uhland School and the City of Uhland.

The Uhland School, once named for its founders and area settlers Karl and Margaretta Krauf Wiegand, was a town centerpiece during the first half of the 20th century. Students at the school earned numerous awards in athletics and fine arts. Their mascot was the kangaroos.

In homage to the original school, and in order to continue the tradition of excellence, Uhland Elementary School’s mascot will also proudly be the kangaroos.

The ribbon cutting event is open to the public, and the entire community is invited to attend. The new school is located at 2331 High Road, Uhland, Texas. View your invitation at: www.hayscisd.net/UESinvite.

As part of the celebration, the campus will recognize students who attended the original Uhland School and their descendants. Additionally, live kangaroos will be present to greet visitors and future students.

Immediately following the ribbon cutting ceremony, the campus will be open for parents, students, and honored guests to tour the facility.

“Uhland Elementary School is the most modern school in Hays CISD,” said Tim Savoy, Hays CISD chief communication officer. “We have improved upon our previous elementary school designs with this school by adding fully equipped science labs, specialized outdoor learning areas, future-forward collaborative learning spaces, the latest in technology, and upgraded security. We live in an age of information and innovation and students benefit from schools that are designed to give them the advantage.”

Uhland Elementary School is the 14th elementary school in Hays CISD and the largest. It has a capacity of 900 students. Construction of the 115,000 square-foot campus was approved as part of the district’s 2017 bond. The building itself cost about $250 per square-foot. The entire project, including furniture and equipment, was budgeted as a $33.9 million investment.
