Hays County Burn Ban Remains Off For Now

“Many of our grass fires are caused by residents who leave the fire unattended while it is still burning or smoldering,” Browning said.

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – Hays County Fire Marshal Clint Browning, appointed by the Commissioners Court for a second two-year term on May 29, cautioned that the burn ban may be placed back on soon if significant, countywide rain doesn’t occur.

On his recommendation, the Court kept the burn ban lifted, but agreed that it could be placed back on as soon as next week when Court meets June 5.

Browning urges local residents to take care of outdoor burning as soon as possible, and to ensure that a responsible adult is on the site at all times, along with a water source.

“Many of our grass fires are caused by residents who leave the fire unattended while it is still burning or smoldering,” Browning said. “Be extremely careful, as grasses are becoming very dry and are a major source of fuel for fires. As our drought index increases, so does the need for caution.”

Browning suggests that those planning to burn outdoors review the rules to ensure maximum safety and avoid fines.
