Hays County Commissioners Court Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Hays CISD, Proclaims May 6 as Hays CISD Day

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – The Hays County Commissioners Court recognized the 50^th anniversary of Hays Consolidated Independent School District by naming Saturday, May 6, as Hays CISD Day in Hays County, and thanked the administration and staff for being a unifying part of the community.

Precinct 2 Commissioner Mark Jones, a proud Hays High graduate, recalled how the cities of Buda and Kyle were often at odds because of the competitive nature of their separate schools prior to consolidation.

The 1967 vote to consolidate those two schools as well students from the towns of Niederwald, Uhland and Wimberley (which now has its own school district), resulted in a first-year student body of 1,157 students. Currently, nearly 20,000 students attend class on one of the 23 campuses.

Jones credited the support of many well-known citizens of the area in making the consolidation work, in particular two men: William “Moe” Johnson, a Buda High School graduate who became a winning basketball coach at Kyle High School and agreed to be the first superintendent of the new school district, and Bob Shelton, a longtime football coach who had won a regional title the previous year.

“I don’t believe the consolidation would have been successful without the work that Mr. Johnson did to unify the communities,” Jones said.

“I know how important a school district is to the life of a community,” County Judge Bert Cobb, M.D., said, thanking the many Hays CISD administration and staff in the audience, “and we thank you for everything you do, day to day.”

HCISD Superintendent Mike McKie told the Court, “on behalf of everyone we thank you for recognizing Hays Consolidated – without people like you we wouldn’t be where we are today.”

McKie invited all citizens to a parade that begins Saturday, May 6, at 10 a.m. at Live Oak Academy on Jack C. Hays Trail and ends at Shelton Stadium.
