Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – The Hays County Commissioners Court Tuesday congratulated and thanked the Hays County Historical Commission and presented HCHC members with the 2017 Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Historical Commission.
The state award goes to honor local commissions that have gone above and beyond to preserve, protect and promote the history of their county.
HCHC Chair Kate Johnson told the Court that work by the Commission’s Historical Marker Committee, Tejano History Committee, and Horticulture Committee to preserve aspects of the county’s history were among the reasons for the award. Preservation-related projects, such as the restoration of the Old County Jail, and the Kyle Railroad Depot and Heritage Center, which enriched the community, also contributed to the award.
“Texas County Historical Commissions provided more than 417,000 volunteer hours in 2017, which is an in-kind donation to the state of more than $10 million,” Johnson said. “The Hays County Historical Commission alone donated 8,000 hours of that amount. We’re very proud to receive this award, and appreciate that the Commissioners Court presented the award to us on behalf of the state.”
