Hays County Commissioners Name September As Hunger Month

Due to its bulk buying power, a $20 donation means the Food Bank can provide 100 meals to those in need, and $30 provides a full, traditional holiday meal to an entire family.

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – The Hays County Commissioners Court proclaimed September as National Hunger Action Month in Hays County and urged the community to donate to or volunteer with the Hays County Food Bank to help end a serious hunger issue throughout the county.

In 2016 the Food Bank distributed more than 679,000 pounds of food through its six partner agencies, one college distribution site and multiple partner programs and to school children through its “backpack” program. The Food Bank also provided holiday meals to more than 11,000 individuals.

More than 4.3 million people in Texas suffer from food insecurity – not knowing when or how they will have food to eat – and 1.7 million of them are children. Often, families must make difficult choices about whether to buy food, pay rent or utilities or purchase medications.

Due to its bulk buying power, a $20 donation means the Food Bank can provide 100 meals to those in need, and $30 provides a full, traditional holiday meal to an entire family.
