The Hays County Commissioners Court has proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and May 14-20 as National Police Week in Hays County.

Hays County Courthouse, TX – The Hays County Commissioners Court has proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and May 14-20 as National Police Week in Hays County.

The dates are recognized throughout the country since being authorized by President John F. Kennedy in 1962 to pay tribute to officers who died in the line of duty and to recognize the public service that law enforcement officers provide in safeguarding rights and freedoms.

Hays County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jeff Jordan, who also serves as president of the Fraternal Order of Police, Hill Country Lodge #23, thanked the Court for recognizing “the duties and sacrifices” that law enforcement officers make, and noted that in 2016 in Texas, 21 officers were killed in the line of duty.

The public is invited to join officers and family members of the fallen at noon on Monday, May 15, on the steps of the Hays County Government Center, 712 S. Stagecoach Trail, San Marcos, for a memorial service in honor of fallen officers.
