Hays County Fire Marshal Releases Investigation Results of Two Wimberley Fires

Office of the Hays County Fire Marshal, San Marcos, TX – Hays County Fire Marshal Clint Browning today issued a statement on the causes of two separate fires within seven days at businesses located in downtown Wimberley.

“The fire on May 30 at Cypress Creek Café has been determined to be an accidental fire that started in the kitchen of the café,” Browning said. “There’s no evidence of arson or other cause,” he said, noting that the two owner-residents who lived above the café were lucky to get out in time.

The building is considered a total loss, with the damage estimated at $750,000.

The second fire, which heavily damaged the Chick-a-Dee Collectibles store on June 7, was caused when a large storage pod that was being moved clipped an electrical wire, which in turn caused power fluctuations at several businesses nearby.

“The ground neutral wire from the power line to the Chick-A-Dee store was pulled loose and the resulting electrical surge had nowhere to go but that building, causing the fire,” Browning said. “There is smoke and water damage throughout the building.” He also said that the insurance adjuster had yet to issue a dollar estimate on the damage.

Precinct 3 County Commissioner Will Conley, whose precinct includes Wimberley, noted the community’s determination and spirit in helping each other during unfortunate events.
