Hays County Food Bank Calling All Bowlers

With populations increasing and the amount of low-income individuals still high, fundraisers are pivotal in ensuring that the food bank can continue to offer programs and services to those who need it most in the community.

Fundraisers play an extremely important role for nonprofit organizations. They are a great way for organizations and individuals in the community to gather together to support a meaningful cause.

Hays County Food Bank’s Hunger STRIKE is one such essential fundraiser. Last year, approximately $12,000 was raised by this annual event.

With populations increasing and the amount of low-income individuals still high, fundraisers are pivotal in ensuring that the food bank can continue to offer programs and services to those who need it most in the community.

Hunger STRIKE takes place on May 18th at Sunset Lanes, located at 1304 TX-123 in San Marcos, Texas.

The event will take place from 1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. and there will be food, beverages, jackpot bowling, a silent auction, and plenty of opportunities to give back. All skill levels are welcome!

Funds will be raised through sponsorships, team registrations, silent auction items, and donations. Hunger STRIKE is a great opportunity to promote team building, encourage philanthropy, and boost employee morale.

The food bank always welcomes new and returning teams, and they hope the event will continue to raise money to support their ongoing operations. In order to continue hosting the event, the food bank will need sponsors and teams to commit to the cause.

What can the food bank buy with funds? $1 can provide 4 meals, $10 can support one nutrition education class, $15 can fuel one day of food rescue and distribution, and $30 can give 10 students a serving of food through the food bank’s backpack program.

Currently, the food bank provides food at 7 public food distributions, to 23 partner agencies, and to six programs through their backpack program. Nutrition education classes are taught each week, vans rescue food daily, and they also carry food for distributions 4 days of the week. Financial donations are necessary to keep these services going.

In 2017, Hays County Food Bank and its 20+ partner agencies distributed 791,838 pounds of food to an average of 2,022 food insecure individuals each week. These residents were senior citizens, children, and many others facing economic challenges. “Food insecurity” refers to the availability of food and one’s access to it.
