Hays County Food Bank’s Fall Campaign Provides 3,000 Holiday Meal Boxes

Hays County, TX

One in seven Hays County residents is food insecure, meaning they may not know where their next meal will come from. Hays County Food Bank provides food all year long, but they choose to offer something a little special during the holiday season.

This year, for its tenth Turkeys Tackling Hunger, the food bank put together 3,000-holiday meal boxes at Night Hawk Frozen Foods (Buda, TX). Night Hawk owners Scott and Leanne Logan were as happy to help feed people in need as they always are. They even jumped on the assembly line to help construct the meal boxes.

A holiday meal box contains a box of stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, yams, pumpkin, and applesauce. Families also receive a frozen turkey as the main dish for their holiday feast.

Holiday meal box distributions took place all across the county during the week prior to Thanksgiving. Individuals who signed up in advance gathered excitedly to collect the fixings for their meal in San Marcos, Kyle, Buda, Wimberley, and Dripping Springs. The meal boxes that were not distributed before the end of the week were given out on a first-come, first serve basis to families that were not able to make the initial sign up on Saturday, November 19th.

The food bank is still working to cover the cost of providing holiday meal boxes to the community. If you would like to donate to this campaign, a $30 donation will sponsor one-holiday meal box for a family in need. Hays County Food Bank will continue to accept Turkeys Tackling Hunger donations until the largest national day of giving, Giving Tuesday, on November 29th. You can donate online at www.HaysFoodBank.org/Donate or send a check or cash to 220 Herndon St., San Marcos, TX 78666.

In 2015, Hays County Food Bank and its 20+ partner agencies distributed 690,397 pounds of food to an average of nearly 12,000 food, insecure residents, each month. These residents were senior citizens, children, and many others facing economic challenges.  “Food insecurity” refers to the availability of food and one’s access to it.  Hays County Food Bank is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the public to perform its mission.  For more information, please visit haysfoodbank.org or visit us on Facebook or Twitter at @HaysFoodBank.
