Hays County Introduces New Online Tool For Public Information Requests

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – Hays County is offering a new, user-friendly online tool allowing users to submit public information requests at their convenience whenever they are connected to the internet.

The online Public Information Request System, powered by GovQA, can be found on the County’s website, https://hayscountytx.com/residents/open-records/.

To submit a request for public information using the system, individuals will need to create an account, which entails creating a username and entering an email address.

Users can then access the system to submit requests, track request progress, receive email updates, and obtain responsive information.

As a reminder, The Texas Public Information Act does not require a governmental body to create new information, to do legal research, or to answer questions.

The new system will assist the Hays County Public Information Coordinator, Debra Anderson, in making sure requests are completed in a timely manner, maintain process consistency, enhance transparency, and ensure compliance with the law.

Anderson works in the Hays County Office of General Counsel.

Hays County is one of a long list of governmental entities now using GovQA to process public information requests.

This online tool serves multiple Texas governmental agencies including the City of San Marcos, City of Kyle, Bexar County, and the Office of the Attorney General of Texas.

Individuals will still have the option to submit public information requests, in writing, using the following methods: by walk-in at the Office of General Counsel, via email, by facsimile, or by mailing their request through the U.S. Postal Service. Anderson will enter these requests into the GovQA system for processing and an account will be created. Each activity in the system will be date and time-stamped.

For more information, contact the Hays County Office of General Counsel at 512.393.2219 and ask for the Public Information Coordinator, Debra Anderson, or Assistant General Counsel, Jordan Powell.
