Hays County Residents Can Claim Their Cash

Hays County Courthouse — Hays County residents may have money waiting for them in the state’s Unclaimed Property database or in local agency accounts and they’ll have an opportunity to search for it at an upcoming event hosted by the Texas Comptroller’s office and Hays County Treasurer Michele Tuttle.

The Hays County Treasurer’s Office and the Unclaimed Property division of the Comptroller’s Office will help people search for unclaimed property online, fill out claim forms and answer questions from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, at the Hays Government Center at 712 South Stagecoach Trail in San Marcos.

“This event is an excellent opportunity for people to regain forgotten funds through the State of Texas or locally in Hays County,” Tuttle said. “There will be experts on hand to help search in person and we encourage anyone who thinks he or she may have unclaimed funds to stop by.”

Unclaimed property held by the Comptroller’s Office includes forgotten utility deposits or other refunds, insurance proceeds, mineral interest or royalty payments, dormant bank accounts and abandoned safe deposit box contents. The Comptroller estimates that one in four Texans has money waiting to be claimed. In Hays County, residents may be missing tax refunds, forgotten payroll checks, County Court and motor vehicle refunds as well as merchant and accounts payable refunds.
“Texas has $4 billion in unclaimed property, and as Comptroller, one of my jobs is to get that money back in the hands of those who earned it,” said Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar. “I encourage Texans to search for their money online or contact my office to claim their rightful property.”

The Comptroller’s office reports that Hays County residents currently have more than $7 million waiting to be claimed.
