Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler Announces Re-Election Bid

On July 7, Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler announced he will run for re-election to seek his third term. 

Sheriff Cutler was first elected to office in November 2010. According to his bio, prior to 2004, he served the Williamson and Travis County communities before spending six years with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

During Sheriff Cutler’s nine-year tenure, he and his command staff, which includes graduates of the Federal Bureau Of Investigation National Academy, have over 100 years of local law enforcement experience.

Sheriff Cutler said together the department has accomplished many of the goals he set for the Sheriff’s Office, such as utilizing the current advancements in technology to enhance and increase the services offered to the citizens of Hays County.

Today, every officer at the Hays County Sheriff’s Department uses body cameras and state of the art equipment for processing crime scenes.

Hays County Sheriff’s Office developed and implemented a standard protocol that has been recognized nationally and by Governor Greg Abbott of Texas. 

Sheriff Cutler said, “he is proud that the Hays County Jail passes every yearly inspection by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards and in 2018, received accolades as a model facility for other jails to follow.”

The Hays County Training Academy provides, on average, over 12,000 hours of annual training for Sheriff’s Office employees and has a 100 percent passing rate for their Basic Peace Officer Academy.

The growth Hays County has experienced the last few years has placed higher demands for Sheriff’s Office resources and has led to a record number of inmates who are incarcerated within the jail.

The passage of the 2016 Public Safety Bond has allowed the county to address infrastructure needs, as well as an expansion to the Hays County jail to address overcrowding. Additionally, the bond funds are being used for a new contemporary communication center housed within the Public Safety Building.

These accomplishments have been made by working closely with the Commissioner’s Court and other agencies to maintain a fiscally conservative approach and staying within the county’s approved budget each year.

Sheriff Cutler will be on the ballot for re-election in the November 2020 election.
