The Hays County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a scam in which a caller is posing as a Hays County employee and “spoofing” the Sheriff’s Office phone number.
Victims of this scam received a phone call appearing to come from a Hays County Sheriff’s Office phone line and the caller identified themselves using the name of a Sheriff’s Office employee.
The scammer on the line said the victim had outstanding warrants and must pay immediately. The scammer often asks for payment to be made in the form of gift cards, credit cards, or debit card information from stores such as Office Depot, CVS Pharmacy, and other businesses.
The Hays County Sheriff’s Office will never call seeking payment over the phone. Never give credit, debit, or gift card information over the phone to someone unfamiliar who asks you for this information.
People who suspect they have been the victim of a scam should call the Hays County Sheriff’s Office at 512.393.7896.
