Hays County Veteran Treatment Court Receives Grant From Texas Veterans Commission

The Texas Veterans Commission has awarded a $15,000 grant to the Hays County Veteran Treatment Court through the Fund for Veteran’s Assistance.

According to Veteran Treatment Court Judge David Glickler, the funds will be used to help pay court costs associated with the filing of expunctions after veterans graduate from the treatment court. Record expunctions are the last step in helping veterans complete the program and the grant will ensure that no veteran faces unexpected costs.

“The Veteran Treatment Court is grateful to the Texas Veterans Commission for recognizing the importance of helping Hays County continue to serve our veterans who are involved in the criminal justice system,” Glickler said. “Our veterans can now be assured that successful completion of the treatment program will result in all of their legal rights being honored and restored without hidden or unexpected costs, and the citizens of Hays County will see that the Hays County Veteran Treatment Court continues to be an asset to the veterans in our community while continuing to function without a significant cost to the taxpayers.”

The Veteran Treatment Court, located at the Hays County Government Center in San Marcos, graduated its first class of five in September 2015. Currently there are 34 veterans in the two-year program. It is open to honorably discharged veterans who commit misdemeanors and have underlying substance abuse and mental health issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety. The program is designed to help treat the reason the problem exists and give the offender an incentive to succeed through a strictly supervised military-style civilian program.
