HEAT Bootcamp marked the grand opening of its new San Marcos location with a San Marcos Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony, Thursday, April 5.

HEAT is a fitness facility with personal training and bootcamp sessions for all shapes, sizes and walks in life. Founded 12 years ago by Texas State Alumni, Cody Butler, as a way to combine physical health and mental health.

According to their website, the name may be HEAT Bootcamp, but the air conditioners are always cranked up during classes; “it would be more than irresponsible to add heat to the type of workouts that we engage in at HEAT.”

Butler received his master’s degree in counseling from Texas State University and recently moved back to San Marcos. He said HEAT began after he discovered the impact movement had on patients during counseling sessions.

His co-owner, Cody Richardson, joined the bootcamp team five years ago and works as a camp coach and personal trainer. HEAT San Marcos has a small team of four trainers to lead members in personal training and bootcamp classes: Shandee Lynn, Butler, Richardson and Seth Mast.

Workouts are completely customizable to accommodate individual members’ goals and physical needs. It’s not just about the exercise either; it’s about having fun and being part of a community.

“The fun part is when you come in and even though we have five to six different workouts on Monday that are all legged based, you don’t know how we’re going to do it,” Butler said, “Because it’s our goal as coaches to always give you something new and creative; we’re teaching you new exercises, and we’re doing it in a way your body never flat knows.”

Currently, HEAT has five classes starting as early as 6 AM and running as late as 6:45 PM; there is a 60-minute class and a 45-minute class with different days concentrating on various parts of the body. Butler said the team was starting out slow to build the community, but as more members join, more classes will be added to the schedule.

“We’re not a gym,” Butler said. “We’re much more than just a workout. We always start with community.”

HEAT starts members off slow with 30-day trial with unlimited sessions for $50.

Butler said he’s had members come in after a bad day and even break down during a workout; while members may come in in a bad place, they rarely leave in one.

HEAT found the space for the San Marcos location in 2015, but the developer discovered structural issues, which delayed renovations. HEAT is located in the old HEB, which was later renovated in to the old Justice Center, on Martin Luther King Dr.

According to Butler, currently, the development only has three tenants: HEAT, the restaurant, Industrial, and the brewery, Hops & Grains, but there is still room for three or more tenants. Hops & Grains and Industrial are still under construction.
