Here Is What The Community Can Look Forward To Next Week At The San Marcos Public Library

Next week, the San Marcos Public Library will host several highlighted events for residents of all ages from coding to STEM related activities.

A variety of free programs are available to the community on a year-round basis; there are also seasonal programs, such as, the after school programs. Residents can discover new hobbies, join clubs or expand their learning. 

From Feb. 2 to Feb. 13, the San Marco Public Library will host the following events:

Interactive Genealogy: Fill in the Gaps with DNA Results

  • Saturday, February 2
  • 10:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Learn about DNA, what to do with the all the results, how to handle unexpected results, search for biological family members, contact DNA matches, and lots more. Beverly Herring and Cindy Foreman began IGG in 2015. They provide free interactive presentations and beginner genealogy classes in the Central Texas area.

 

Seed Swap! With the Library’s Herbalism Club

  • Sunday, February 3, and every first Sunday
  • 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Join us for an ongoing herbalism knowledge-share with other local gardeners, foragers, and plant lovers. Feel free to bring favorite books, recipes, seeds or cuttings to swap, or just come ready to learn. This session, bring garden seeds to swap and share!

 

Scratch Sundays

  • Sundays: February 3, February 17, and March 3
  • 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Learn the basics of coding with Scratch. Tell multimedia stories with this user-friendly software. Scratch is a programming language developed by MIT where children can create their own interactive stories, games, and animations.  Children should bring a parent to learn coding together and support future exploration. Ages 9 and up.

 

Resume Workshop

  • Monday, February 4
  • 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

A killer resume can land you a dream job! In this hand-on class, we will guide you through the process of resume formatting and share the best tips to impress recruiters. Please bring a written draft of your resume (typed or hand written) and a USB flash drive. 

 

Retirement Living

  • Thursday February 7
  • 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

San Marcos Public Library  

Facilities that specialize in housing for senior citizens vary widely in cost and services. The varieties include communities for independent living, assisted living, memory care, nursing, and respite care. Find the right place for you or for your loved one in this informative session taught by elder care consultant Angie Biehunko. Everybody welcome. 

 

Free Classical Concert

  • Monday, February 11
  • 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Whether you enjoy Bach, Brahms, or Bartók this concert is sure to bring you joy. The evening’s music will include solo piano, violin, and viola works as well as duets and trios. These works are brought to you by Texas State University music students. 

 

Credit Building and Repair Workshop

  • Wednesday, February 13
  • 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Good credit is an important aspect of many of life’s major decisions; it is required to obtain loans, keep low interest rates on your credit cards and purchase a home or a car. It can also help you save money on insurance, utilities and even cell phone services.

But establishing and maintaining a good line of credit is not always easy and it is important to understand what it takes to build strong credit. Learn more about the importance of credit, improving one’s credit score, reading a credit report, and more. Presented by educational outreach staff of A+ Federal Credit Union.
