Hero Roadside Assistance Program Gets New Look, Expands Service

HERO is a free roadside assistance program that provides basic repair services, assists first responders at crash scenes, removes roadway debris, and will now be able to move minor crashes from the roadway.

AUSTIN — In an effort to improve safety and mobility, the Texas Department of Transportation is expanding the Highway Emergency Response Operator (HERO) motorist assistance program.

HERO is a free roadside assistance program that provides basic repair services, assists first responders at crash scenes, removes roadway debris, and will now be able to move minor crashes from the roadway.

As part of a new contract with Serco, Inc., HERO vehicles will soon patrol 138 miles of roadway in the Austin District along I-35, US 183, US 290, SH 71, and MoPac. The program includes 24 trucks and will provide services along 10 different routes from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

To keep pace with the needs of our growing region, the HERO program is slated to expand its service area to cover a total of 310 miles of area roadways.

The expansion will include additional coverage on I-35, US 183, US 290, SH 71, and MoPac and add portions of 183A, Loop 360, RM 620, US 79, and SH 45.
