Hillviews Honored With CASE Circle Of Excellence Bronze Award

Hillviews is published three times a year, its audience is largely alumni, donors, staff and faculty, and other educators around the state.

SAN MARCOS – Texas State University’s Hillviews magazine has been recognized by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) with a Bronze level 2018 Circle of Excellence Award for editorial design.

Hillviews was honored for the feature layout “Eating Animals in America,” published in the Spring 2017 issue.

The team behind the winning presentation included Blain Hefner, senior graphic designer, Lauren Mikiten, graphic designer and Stephanie Schulz, photographer. Hillviews managing editor Julie Cooper authored the article.

The winning entries utilized illustration or photography in provocative ways and included type treatments, infographics and illustrations that added to the overall design without being obtrusive.

This editorial spread for Hillview caught the CASE judges’ attention by offering “multi-layered, art-directed photography deliberately designed to jar readers a little, while inviting them to read more.”

“A clear conversation striker, this design concept and photograph were brilliant for illustrating the issue of food ethics,” the judges’ comments continued. “We enjoyed the multi-layered approach taken and felt that they successfully created a visual story that demands attention.”

The CASE Circle of Excellence Awards received 3,204 entries for consideration in nearly 100 categories from 676 higher education institutions, independent schools and affiliated organizations located worldwide.

Peer professionals at schools, colleges and universities as well as professionals from outside of education judged the entries and awarded nearly 350 awards to more than 190 institutions in 11 countries as follows: 104 bronze; 118 silver, 100 gold and 13 grand gold.

Hillviews is published three times a year, its audience is largely alumni, donors, staff and faculty, and other educators around the state.

The magazine captures Texas State’s academic and social scene by telling stories of its faculty, students and alumni. Hillviews strives to address a variety of issues that impact or appeal to readers with an interest in Texas State.
