Hormuth And Martin Go Back-To-Back For Weekly Sun Belt Soccer Awards

It is the first time that a SBC team has swept the awards in back-to-back weeks since South Alabama did so last season during the first two weeks of September.

NEW ORLEANS – For the second straight week, Texas State soccer players Kassi Hormuth and Heather Martin both earned the Sun Belt Conference’s Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively. It is the first time that a SBC team has swept the awards in back-to-back weeks since South Alabama did so last season during the first two weeks of September.

Hormuth extended her point streak to six consecutive matches with two goals and an assist while helping the Bobcats pick up road victories at Little Rock and ULM. Against the Warhawks, she netted her second straight match-winning goal that came late in the ninth minute off a corner kick. The senior followed with an assist on TXST’s second goal of the contest a little over seven minutes later. The Cedar Park, Texas native put the Bobcats in front against the Trojans in the 68 minute when she rifled a 30-yard strike from the left side of the pitch into the upper right corner.

In Sun Belt matches, Hormuth ranks first in assists (4) and match-winning goals (3), tied for second in points (12) and tied for fourth in goals (4) following this past weekend’s matches. She also moved into sole possession of ninth place on the school’s career list with 44 points, passing Tori Hale (2012-14) and Lauren Prater (2013-16).

This is Hormuth’s third weekly SBC award after earning the award last week honor and taking home her first after the first weekend of conference play in 2016.

Martin earned both wins between the posts to earn her seventh and eighth victories this season. At ULM, the sophomore needed to make just one save to record her fifth consecutive shutout that tied the school record set in 2001.

She followed with a career-high tying eight-save performance at LR. Her biggest save of the day was on a penalty kick in the first half to become the first TXST goalkeeper to stop a penalty kick since Oct. 5, 2012 against San Jose State to break a skid of nine consecutive makes by opponents. Martin’s sixth save of the match was the 100th of her career to be the eighth Bobcat ever to reach the mark.

It is the third weekly SBC honor for the Midlothian, Texas native in the last four weeks. In Sun Belt matches only, Martin leads the conference in GAA (0.49) and is second in save percentage (.886).

Texas State closes out its regular season this weekend with the Sun Belt regular season championship on the line. The Bobcats host Troy on Friday at 7 p.m. and South Alabama at 1 p.m. at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
