AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Transportation will temporarily close I-35 mainlanes to north and southbound traffic from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, Mar. 23, and 11 p.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Mar. 24, for partial demolition of the William Cannon Drive bridge.
During the closure, I-35 mainlane traffic will be detoured to the north and southbound frontage roads at the William Cannon Drive exit (exit 228.) Eastbound and westbound traffic on William Cannon Drive will be detoured south to Slaughter Lane or north to Stassney Lane.
Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes during the closure as delays are expected.
As part of the Mobility35 improvements from Stassney Lane to William Cannon Drive, lanes are being closed to allow crews to demolish the north side of the William Cannon Drive bridge to prepare for bridge reconstruction and the construction of a new U-turn lane.
Prior to the demolition work, the William Cannon bridge will have intermittent closures during the week for pavement leveling and to allow workers to shift traffic to the south side of the bridge.
Post-demolition, the south half of the William Cannon Drive bridge will remain intact, allowing drivers to travel east and west. The width of the lanes will be narrower during this first phase. Once the north half of the bridge is complete, the south side of the bridge will be demolished and reconstructed in phase two.
Road signs have been placed to alert drivers of the upcoming closures. TxDOT asks the traveling public to adhere to construction signage and remain aware when traveling through the work zone.
Please note: This is in addition to the full I-35 mainlane closures at FM 3406 (Old Settlers Boulevard) in Williamson County scheduled for Friday, Mar. 23 and Saturday, Mar. 24 for bridge construction.
The I-35 from Stassney Lane to William Cannon Drive project will bring improvements to mobility, safety, and connectivity for all modes of transportation.
These include improved entrance/exit ramps, reconstruction of the Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive bridges, adding U-turn lanes, and bicycle and pedestrian enhancements.
Work on the $79 million project is expected to be complete winter 2019/2020.
