Indigenous culture, ancestry shows debut at Price Center

Staff Reports

SAN MARCOS, TX – San Marcos’ own Indigenous Cultures Institute (ICI) has created Napak?: Our Journey, a unique multi-faceted display of photographs, powwow regalia, ceremonial jewelry, videos, and original art to share the story of the Indigenous community in San Marcos. A companion show, Exploring Our Roots, offers 30 original works of art focusing on personal and collective ancestry. Both shows are hanging now through Nov. 27 in the Price Center.

Napak? is a culturally authentic and stunning exhibit that shares the story of San Marcos’ Indigenous community, their annual powwow, and Indigenous Arts Summer Encounter hangs throughout our Parlor and main hallway Oct. 4 through Nov. 27. The show was created and curated by ICI’s Maria Rocha and Paulina Dosal-Terminel.

Dance regalia and portraits of dancers

A reception for the ICI, hosted by the new Council for the Indigenous & Tejano Community, will be held Sat., Oct. 16 from 11-3 in the Center’s 1910 Room and the Central Texas Danzantes will perform traditional Native American dances as part of the event in the Garden from 2-3pm.

“We’re honored that the Price Center is hosting our sacred items and grateful to be sharing our culture with our entire San Marcos community,” says Dr. Mario Garza, the Institute’s Board of Elders Chair, who is providing his personal Traditional Dancer’s regalia.

Exploring Our Roots is a companion show featuring the works of 30 area artists that explore family lore, personal stories, places, and pre-historic connections to one another. From traditional painting and photography, to mixed media, fiber art, and assemblage, the selected works provide a unique take on personal ancestry. The show hangs in our Garden Room and most of the works are for sale. A portion of any proceeds benefits the Center’s ongoing arts efforts.

Community Art Shows are conducted by the Price Center Art’s Committee and funded in part through a grant from the San Marcos Arts Commission. The gallery venues are open to the public Wed – Fri, noon-5; Sat., 10-3. Occasionally, a private rental of a venue space may prevent access to some of the art during open hours. For more information, please call 512-392-2900, stop by the Center at 222 W. San Antonio St., or visit price-center.org or Facebook @ Price Center & Garden.
