International Sculpture Day ushers in pop-up art show in San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, TX – In conjunction with International Sculpture Day on April 24th, the Price Center is featuring a new, two-week Pop-Up installation of sculptures suitable for outdoor use.

An outdoor, one-day installation of submitted works will take place this Sat., April 24 from 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the Center’s front Garden. The works will be displayed indoors and available to view daily for the remainder of the installation through May 8.

The new all sculpture show, titled “Sculpture for the Garden: Seeds of Change,” was created as an annual event to help add permanent sculptural art to the Center’s Garden and grounds.

11 original works by 9 area artists range from cast aluminum to hand-built clay to mosaics, found objects, and more. Most of the artwork is available to purchase, and a portion of any proceeds benefits the non-profit Price Center’s ongoing community arts efforts.

Local artist Cathy Sparks presented the idea to celebrate sculpture to the Price Center Arts Committee last year and, due to COVID, the idea was tabled, but it was too good to let it go.

“Sculpture is not as present as other visual arts in San Marcos, and we liked Cathy’s suggestion to help plant the seed for an annual event to celebrate the unique medium,” said Joan Nagel, Price Center Arts Committee Chair.  “The opportunity to add public art to our garden and overall grounds is a nice bonus to the effort,” she added.

Community Art Shows are conducted by the Price Center Art’s Committee and funded in part through a grant from the San Marcos Arts Commission.

The current gallery display, “Honoring the Planet: Restore Our Earth,” hangs throughout the first-floor galleries through May 22. A show featuring works by San Marcos Art League members titled “A Place for Art” will hang next.
