Pizza got its start in Naples where it was popular where it was an inexpensive and quick meal for the city’s poorer population.
It’s another one of those National Days in the United States observing one of American’s favorite foods.
Today is National Pizza Day. According to the National Day Calendar, there are at least 1,500 days celebrating foods, friends and family members.
Modern pizza got its start in Naples where it was popular as an inexpensive and quick meal for the city’s poorer population.
“The closer you got to the bay, the more dense their population, and much of their living was done outdoors, sometimes in homes that were little more than a room,” said Carol Helstosky, author of “Pizza: A Global History” and associate professor of history at the University of Denver.
According to history.com, Pizza would be an unknown commodity in Italy outside of Naples until the 1940s. However, Neapolitans migrating to the United States were replicating and sharing the delicacy in place like New York, Trenton, New Haven, Boston, Chicago and St. Louis.
The first U.S. document Pizzeria was Gennaro Lombardi’s G. Lombardi’s on Manhattan’s Spring Street in 1905. Lombardi’s is still located in the Little Italy section of Manhattan and serves its traditional pizza the same way it always has.
Whether National Pizza Day is intended to celebrate Pizza’s arrival in the United States or the Neapolitans who brought it to us, who can say. Pizza places around the US will have their promotions going all the same.
So, if you’re not sure what’s for dinner or you don’t feel like cooking, how about toasting the Neapolitans with a slice of pizza.
