January 8 — January 11: A Week Back At School With San Marcos CISD Students At A Glance

San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District is making strides to engage its students in learning every day.

San Marcos CISD has nearly 8,000 students enrolled between its high school, two middle schools and six elementary schools according to the district’s website. 

Here is a quick look at what SMCISD students and staff were up to the week of January 7 thru January 11.

On Tuesday, January 8, the San Marcos CISD staff and administration welcomed students back to Campus for the first day of the spring semester.

Goodnight Middle School welcomed their students back to campus with a performance by the Texas State Cheer team.

Following the performance, the cheer squad shared advice on life, college and wellness.

The district congratulated Miller Middle School student, Addison Odam, for being named a finalist in the 2018 Texas State History Essay Contest.

The contest encouraged students from across Texas to answer the question, ‘What history in your community is worth saving?’

The topic of Odam’s article was the historic First Baptist Church of San Marcos.

The church was designated an official local historic landmark in November 2018 by the San Marcos City Council.

In October 2018, the efforts of members of the community, the Main Street Program and other partners to save the church were rewarded with a $150,000 grant through the Partners in Preservation campaign.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation announced the award on October 29, 2018.

Odam received a $100 gift card courtesy of the Rotary Club of Austin and the Sons of the Republic of Texas and a Texas flag that has flown over the northernmost point of the Republic of Texas (in present-day Wyoming).

She also received a Texas History backpack and a replica of a historical map from the GLO Archives map collection, and a Certificate of Achievement signed by Commissioner Bush.
