Kyle – Most of us can agree that collaboration is an essential key to success. Kyle City Council Member David Wilson and Assistant City Manager James Earp are members of the Hays Caldwell Public Utility Agency (HCPUA). The agency was formed in 2007 in order to address long-term water needs for Kyle, Buda, San Marcos, and the Canyon Regional Water Authority.
Recently, HCPUA devised and implemented a “sharing plan” to address the area’s water needs. This plan allows the City of Kyle to share water they don’t currently need (~.5 MGD) to supplement Buda’s supply. Not paying to store this excess water saves Kyle $250,000/year for the eight years Buda is projected to need the water. The final savings total about $2 million AND the water will be returned to Kyle in the future!
How about future of Kyle’s water supply? As part of the sharing plan, HCPUA partners agreed to split costs to build needed water infrastructure for our growing communities. The partnership will build water drilling and production equipment and facilities and piping facilities. The project will cost about $300 million.
In coming years, Kyle is guaranteed an additional 3 MGD and up to 10 MGD after the project’s final phases around 2028. “This plan is a win-win in order to meet the entire region’s water needs for the next 50 years,” Earp said.
