Kyle City Council Extends Applications For Ad Hoc Renaming Committee

KYLE, TEXAS – Kyle City Council recently approved extending applications for the Ad Hoc Renaming Committee to rename West Farm to Market Road 150, formerly Rebel Drive, through Monday, Oct. 5.  

The original deadline to apply for the Ad Hoc Renaming Committee was Monday, Sept. 14. But during the Tuesday, Sept. 15 regular meeting, Council discussed extending the deadline to allow more time for more applicants to apply.  

The City of Kyle’s Ad Hoc Renaming Committee will consist of seven citizen members and two staff liaisons.

They will be charged with exploring, planning, and recommending possible names for a portion of West Farm to Market Road 150 and make regular reports to the City Council as to their progress.

The term of this committee will expire upon the completion of its work, or Dec. 31, 2020, whichever is sooner.  

To be considered for the Ad Hoc Renaming Committee, residents must meet qualifications and submit an application at https://cokvolunteer.applicantpool.com/jobs/476861.html by Oct. 5.   

Listed below are the requirements for serving on the Ad Hoc Renaming Committee as required by the resolution. 

Members of the Commission must:  

• City of Kyle resident  
• At least 18 years of age    
• A citizen of the United States    
• A qualified voter of the City    
• Have been a resident of the State of Texas and the City for at least 12 consecutive months   
• Not be delinquent on any indebtedness to the city  

The Committee Applications will come back before Council for selection during the Tuesday, Oct. 6 meeting.   

Background  

The Kyle City Council originally approved an ordinance to rename the entire length of Rebel Drive to Fajita Drive at its Aug. 18 meeting.

After listening to members of the community express discomfort with the renaming, the City Council decided to hold a public hearing and take action to reconsider the item to allow more input from the community at its Aug. 25 meeting.   

Fajita Drive was originally chosen as an homage to the City of Kyle’s place in fajita history. Juan Antonio “Sonny” Falcón sold the first fajita taco in September of 1969 at a concession booth at a Diez & Seis celebration in Kyle.

Falcón, later known as “The Fajita King,” went on to popularize the dish throughout Central Texas by selling his fajita tacos to crowds of appreciative people at rodeos, fairs, and outdoor festivals on nights and weekends.  

After holding a public hearing during the City Council’s Aug. 25 meeting, they voted six to one to rescind the previous vote to rename Rebel Drive to Fajita Drive at their Aug. 18 meeting.

Council then voted unanimously on a first reading to remove Rebel Drive as the street name. 

During their Tuesday, Sept. 1 meeting, Kyle City Council approved, upon second reading, the removal of the street name Rebel Drive — officially reverting the road back to its state-assigned designation as West Ranch to Market Road 150, until a new name can be chosen — and approved a resolution creating an Ad Hoc Committee to rename West Ranch to Market Road 150.
