April Is Fair Housing Month

Hays County Courthouse, TX – The Hays County Commissioners Court proclaimed April as Fair Housing Month in Hays County at its April 16 meeting and encouraged residents to honor the national policy prohibiting discrimination in housing. Title VIII of the 1968 Civil Rights Act, as amended, prohibits such discrimination.

According to the proclamation, fair housing can only be accomplished with the help and cooperation of all Americans to ensure this fundamental concept and entitlement is realized.

The Court also reaffirmed its commitment to upholding fair housing laws and encouraged potential homeowners, those seeking financing, and renters to be aware of their rights.

The Texas Fair Housing Act and the U.S. Fair Housing Act protect persons from discriminatory housing practices in the sale, rental and financing of dwellings based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, physical or mental disability, or familial status (presence of a child under age 18 living with parents or legal custodians, person securing custody of children under 18, or a pregnant woman).

For more information, or to make a complaint about housing discrimination, contact the Texas Workforce Commission at 888-452-4778 or 512-463-2642, TTY 512-371-7473.
