For 26 years the League of Women Voters has held a Wine Tasting event as the annual fund raiser. This year for the 27th annual event, beer tasting will be added along with the wines. The League hopes to appeal to a wider audience and support the growing craft beer industry in the area.
The Wine and Beer Tasting Event will be on Thursday, January 29, at Quail Creek Country Club, 2701 Airport Highway 21, in San Marcos from 6 to 8 p.m.
The beer tastings will come from Middleton Brewing Company, now in its new location on RR 12 between San Marcos and Wimberley. It is a craft brewery—a small, independent, community-minded business which brews traditional and innovative beers.
Middleton specializes in Belgian style beers, such as saison, a fruity, spicy beer. American and British beers are brewed as well. Two examples of Middleton’s beers will be available at the tasting.
The featured winery, Wimberley Valley Winery, is located 7 miles north of Wimberley on Lone Man Mountain Road. A beautiful new Tuscan-style building houses the tasting room and wine-making facility. Although the tasting room has only been open for 4 years, the company has been growing grapes and producing wine on the property since 1983.
Four traditional varietals will be offered at the tasting event: Pinot Grigio, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Cellar Select White, a semi-sweet specialty wine made from grapes grown at the vineyard will also be on the tasting menu.
Along with the tastings, a fun feature will be a silent auction including wine-themed gift baskets, gift certificates, and decorative items.
As the only League fundraiser for the year, proceeds fund the local and state Voters Guides which are published and distributed before elections, the political debates, and the meet-and-greet reception for political candidates.
Non-partisanship is a principle of the League. No political candidate nor political party is ever endorsed or opposed by the League. The League works to encourage active citizen participation to maintain the freedom to vote. Therefore, participating in the fundraiser supports the right to vote for the candidate of your choice.
The League welcomes both women and men dedicated to voter education and citizen participation in elections. Over the past year, Wimberley residents have become active members of the League thus creating the San Marcos and Wimberley Area League of Women Voters.
Event tickets are $20. They can be purchased from any member of the League or at the door the night of the event for the same price. To order tickets ahead, or for more information about the event, please contact Jan Rudnicki, event chair, at janrudnicki@grandecom.net
