TONIGHT: League Of Women Voters Sponsors Debate For Hays Co. Candidates

League of Women Voters of Hays County will hold two debates for local candidates.

The debate for the Hays County candidates will be Monday, Oct. 10.

The debate for the San Marcos City candidates will be Monday, Oct. 17. Both debates will be at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins Street at 6:30 p.m.

Candidates invited to the first debate include candidates for U.S. Representatives and State Board of Education, and Hays County Sheriff, Justice of the Peace, and Constables.

Candidates for City Mayor and City Council will be featured in the second debate.

Jeannie Lewis, Debate Coordinator, encourages all concerned citizens to attend the debate to be informed of issues important to the San Marcos community. Debate moderator for the first debate is Kaylene Ray, retired local attorney.

Candidates have received questionnaires prepared by the League of Women Voters. Their responses will be published in the Voters Guide, which will be available to the public and through the local media.

Citizens are also encouraged to try the new non-partisan voters’ guide online, Vote 411.org. Upon entering a home address, a citizen can view and compare the candidates and their responses for that particular voting precinct.

Previously known as San Marcos League of Women Voters, the League is a non-partisan organization open to both women and men dedicated to voter awareness and education.

The League believes in the representative form of government and individual liberties established in the Constitution of the United States.

A guiding principle of the League is that  “government depends upon the informed and active participation of its citizens and requires that governmental bodies protect the citizen’s right to know by giving adequate notice of proposed actions, holding open meetings and making public records accessible.”

The last day to register to vote is Tuesday, October 11. Early voting is Monday, October 24, through Friday, November 4. Election date is Tuesday, November 8.

See the League’s Voters Guide for the location of local polling places, which may differ from past elections.
