Letter To The Editor: Every Election Matters, Have A Voice

This may not be the “Big One,” the presidential election, but these races have an extreme bearing on our daily lives.

Dear Editor,

It is early voting still today and tomorrow; then Tuesday is the last day to vote in our primaries. This may not be the “Big One”, the presidential election, but these races have an extreme bearing on our daily lives.

If you are concerned about your property taxes, local laws and ordinances, the roads you drive on, your courts, county planning and development and much more, you need to educate yourself on each candidate and get out and vote.

For those unaware, this is the primaries, so you will need to decide whether you want to vote in the Republican or Democrat primary. The candidates are divided based on the party for the primaries, and this will determine the Republican and Democrat candidates that will face off in the election.

Some races may only have candidates in one party, and this will determine the outcome of that election, as there are no opponents for the election beyond the primary.

There are many forums to find information on candidates, including Vote411.org, put together by the Hays County League of Women Voters. Go to candidate websites and read what they have to say.

Be mindful people on Facebook and other social media forums will post messages based on personal biases, not all of the information will be accurate, and it is important for you to form your own fully informed opinion.

Knowledge is power, use that power to vote for the candidate with the best qualifications for the job. In a time of so much uncertainty, our vote is our control. We determine who we put in those powerful positions that ultimately decide the path of our lives.
