LifeLong Learning Offering Two New Workshops At Price Center

San Marcos, TX –The LifeLong Learning Organization of San Marcos (LLL) and Price Center are teaming up again with local artist Michael Hannon to present two new, six-week workshops beginning next month.

The History of Writing and Visual Arts in China and Chinese Brush Painting with Emphasis on Color will begin six-week runs beginning May 6 and 7 respectively. Both workshops require advance registration, payment of a small fee, and, in the case of the Bruch Painting, certain tools/materials to participate.

The History of Writing and Visual Arts in China will present an historical perspective of the relationship between writing and pictures in the Chinese, Japanese and Korean fine art traditions.

Issues covered will include the contents of writing on visual images; the use of literature as subject matter for art with a focus on the poems Ode on the Red Cliff, Peach Blossom Spring, and The Tale of Genji as well as original poems written by the artist on their own artwork and how these relate to the visual artwork.

A discussion of why writing on paintings bothers many western critics yet not most Asians will also be offered. The class will meet Monday’s from 1 to 2:15 PM, May 6, 13, 20, 27, and June 3 and 10. A $25 participation fee is required.

Chinese Brush Painting with an Emphasis on Color will be a practical course in Chinese watercolor painting with an emphasis on gaining familiarity with all of the major technical styles of Chinese watercolor: the colored outline style of painting– blue-green landscapes and ink outline with light color; and boneless (without outline) painting in color.

While higher status has often been given to pure ink painting in Chinese art criticism, colored paintings have always been widely appreciated throughout Chinese art history.

The use of the brush with color, while still influenced by calligraphic techniques is often used in a more painterly manner when using color. The class will meet Tuesdays from 1 to 3 PM, May 7, 14, 21, 28, and June 4 and 11. A $45 participation fee is required and a materials supply list is provided.

The LifeLong Learning Organization of San Marcos, founded by Dr. Marianne Reese, is a nonprofit organization offering a broad range of stimulating and engaging opportunities for self-fulfillment presented in a social and pleasurable atmosphere. Learn more by visiting www.lllsanmarcos.org.
