Living Outside The Lines: “A Night with Lady A”

Unashamedly, I had no idea who Lady A was until sometime after they released, “Need You Now.”

If the names Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood mean something, then you might be a country music fan; the trio makes up the multi-platinum group Lady Antebellum.

Established in 2006, selling over 18 million units and producing nine Number 1 singles, Lady Antebellum has left their mark on the country music industry.  2010’s “Need You Now” won Record and Song of the Year, plus a Grammy award. Oh, and there are six other Grammy awards as well.

Unashamedly, I had no idea who Lady A was until sometime after they released, “Need You Now.”

Despite a friend’s claim that it’s a song about “drunk dialing,” it’s one of my favorites. Don’t judge me, it’s catchy, and in this writer’s humble opinion, 2010’s Just A Kiss, 2014’s Long Stretch of Love & Bartender and 2017’s You Look Good are also fabulous.

On August 26, Lady Antebellum played at Starplex (formerly Gexa Energy) Pavilion in Dallas, and thanks to my very generous daughter, who purchased tickets for my birthday; I was there! Unfortunately, the fallout from Hurricane Harvey kept her from making the trip; she missed the concert. #sadday

Since I’m such a thoughtful mom, I couldn’t let her generosity go to waste, so my sister-in-law and I sucked it up, and forced ourselves to have a fun evening despite the circumstances.

The night was a bit surreal. Knowing much of the state was suffering through a hurricane, while we sat dry and comfortable at an outdoor concert, was disconcerting. For a few short hours, we disconnected from facing the reality of hurricane devastation.

Lady A did not disappoint; the concert was tremendous. Not only did the group rock all of their most popular hits, they also performed a few covers.  For me the night had two highlights: Hillary Scott and Kelsey Ballerini singing Beyoncé’s, “Crazy in Love” & Hillary’s performance of her solo, Thy Will.

In 2015, Hillary suffered a devastating miscarriage; the faith-based solo release tells the story of her heartbreak. Having endured my own difficulties with infertility and miscarriage, I could certainly relate to her pain.

At the time of the song’s release a very good friend was also walking through a similar situation, so when Hillary chose to sing Thy Will during the concert, to an audience with their phone flashlights on, it felt like Sunday morning church.

To top the evening off, Lady A announced that the proceeds from all merchandise sales would go to Hurricane Harvey relief. Oh, and I should add that whenever I hang with my sister-in-law, it’s always a good time! Plus, Brett Young opened. #eyecandy

So, to my kindhearted daughter, thank you for the gift of a Night with Lady A. You were missed.

Until Next Time,
