Local First Responders, San Marcos High School Students Participate In Shattered Dreams Program

San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District is making strides to engage its students in learning every day.

San Marcos CISD has nearly 8,000 students enrolled between its high school, two middle schools and six elementary schools according to the district’s website. 

Here is a quick look at what SMCISD students and staff were up to the week of March 8 thru March 15.

On March 13, local first responders visited San Marcos High School for a demonstration through the Shattered Dreams Program.

Shattered Dreams is a two-day, school based program that promotes responsible decision-making among high school students. The program demonstrates the dangers of underage drinking and impaired driving by showing them “how irresponsible choices can end all dreams.”

The program is a collaborative effort between communities and health professionals around the country to demonstrate the dangers of texting and drinking, drinking and driving and other reckless behaviors to young drivers.

This year’s program was sponsored by the San Marcos High School Student Council, San Marcos Police Department, San Marcos/Hays EMS, San Marcos Fire Department, Hays Caldwell Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Hays County Criminal Justice Center, Will Tow Towing Company, First Christian Church, Flowerland and Sign Arts.

The demonstration brought students outside to the scene of a mock accident to watch first responders administer aid to accident victims.

For a second year, AVID students have the opportunity to visit Boston, Massachusetts to tour Harvard, Tufts and Brown University.  

Ten students will have the opportunity to visit Harvard University this spring!  

In other news, the school district announced SMCISD students shone at the Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

The Alamo Regional Science and Engineer Fair consists of three sub-fairs with different areas of focus.

Each sub-fair has categories in which student projects are placed: Chemistry, Computer Science and Math, Earth and Space, Engineering, Physics; Biochemistry, Medicine and Health, Microbiology; and Behavioral and Social Science, Biochemistry, Botany, Environmental sciences and Zoology.

Two SMHS seniors soccer athletes, Angel Rodriguez and Danielle Hernandez, signed their letters of intent to attend Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Fall 2019.

Devin Branches, SMHS Athlete, also signed a letter of intent for Coastal Bend College on March 5 in front of family and friends.

After seven weeks of reading in the competition across the nation, Goodnight Middle School’s Connie Martin and her students are winners in THE GREAT READING GAMES!
In addition, Goodnight MS student Jarren Villalobos placed 2nd in the Nation gaining National Recognition.

SMCISD gave a shoutout to Lee Porterfield and Blue Sky Mortgage for their pizza party support, technology for their assistance with Chromebooks and mini iPads, and for all of Goodnight Middle School’s dyslexic students for their dedication to reading regularly for seven weeks and becoming better readers every day!
