City Introduces New Online Tool for Records Requests

The City of San Marcos is offering a new online tool that will allow users to make open records requests at any time wherever they can access the internet.

The online open records tool can be found on the City’s website at www.sanmarcostx.gov/openrecords.

“The system will serve as another tool for us to ensure we are providing exceptional customer service and transparency,” said City Clerk Jamie Lee Pettijohn. “It will assist us in making sure we complete requests in a timely manner, maintain process consistency and ensure compliance with the law.”

Requestors will need to create an account in order to file the request. To create an account requestors need to enter a name and an email address to ensure City staff are able to contact them with status reports on the request. People also have the option to include their phone numbers, if that is their preferred method of being contacted.

The online request system is powered by GovQA, which serves many Texas cities including El Paso and San Antonio.
People still have the option to submit open records requests in writing. City staff will enter these requests into the GovQA system for processing.

“Every activity that occurs in the system will be date and time stamped,” Pettijohn said. “If we get requests by walk-in, fax or by email, those requests will be entered by staff and the process begins.”
