The City of San Marcos Main Street Program is joining national organizations to celebrate the preservation of our country’s historical places.
Every May, the National Trust for Historic Preservation dedicates an entire month to celebrating the places that make our communities unique. This year’s campaign called This Place Matters encourages people to speak out about the places and buildings in their communities that matter.
The downtown area in San Marcos has a number of historically significant structures, many of them built in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s.
In collaboration with the City’s GIS Division, the Main Street Program has put together a visual storymap of some favorite locations downtown.
Many of the buildings, with the exception of the Hays County Jail and the Annex Building, are occupied by businesses or other entities and can be visited during the day. Several of the locations have historical plaques on the outside with detailed information about the building and its history.
