Wuthrich Walks Off Bobcats in 10th Inning
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Sophomore outfielder John Wuthrich singled through the left side in the bottom of the 10th to drive home the winning run in Texas State’s 8-7 victory over Troy Sunday afternoon. The game started Saturday night before inclement weather caused the game to be suspended.
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 20-12 on the season and 7-5 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Trojans fall to 16-15 overall and 5-7 in conference play.
Earning the win was Zachary Leigh (2-1) after he tossed 3.0 scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts. Suffering the loss was Sadler Goodwin (2-4) in which he pitched 4.0 innings, struck out three and allowed the game-winning run.
Connor Reich started and pitched the first three innings on Saturday. He recorded five strikeouts while surrendering three runs on two hits. Both Brent Hebert and Brayden Theriot tossed two innings out of the bullpen and struck out one batter apiece.
Finishing with three hits apiece was Jaylen Hubbard, Dalton Shuffield and Wuthrich. Travon Benton and Will Hollis had two hits each and drove in three and two runs, respectively.
Troy was able to get its first three batters on and scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly. The Trojans scored again on another sac fly and then their third and final run of the frame on a Chase Smartt single through the right side.
Hubbard and Wuthrich led off the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back singles. After a fly out to center field moved Hubbard just 90 feet from home, Skyler Valentine hit a 1-1 pitch to deep center to easily score Hubbard to cut the deficit to 3-1.
In the second, Shuffield started off by doubling down the left field line. Another deep fly out to center, this time by Wesley Faison, moved the sophomore infielder to third. Two batters later, Felipe Rodriguez laced a 2-1 offering to center field for an RBI single and make it a one-run game.
The bottom of the third began with Wuthrich send the first pitch he saw to center for a single. Following a walk to Jaxon Williams, Valentine hit another deep fly ball to center field that allowed Wuthirch to move to third. On the very next pitch, Hollis doubled off the left center field wall to plate both runners and give the Bobcats a 4-3 lead.
Shuffield bunted down the third base line for an infield single to put runners on the corners. Faison popped up to the second baseman for the second out of the inning and at which point the umps delayed the game because of lightning in the area. After an hour and 10-minute delay, it was decided to suspend the game until Sunday.
When the game resumed on Sunday, Benton blasted a 2-2 pitch that hit off the top of the right field wall and over for a three-run home run. His third homer of the season increased TXST’s lead to 7-3.
Troy answered back with a three-run home run from Loagn Cerny in the fifth. The Trojans loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth and scored the tying run on a walk. Hebert came on to pitch the Bobcats out of the jam and did so by inducing two infield flies and a fly out to Benton in left center.
Texas State had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the sixth after loading the bases but were unable to push a run across. The Bobcats would go on to leave two on with one in scoring position in the seventh as well.
In the top of the 10th, the Trojans got runners on the corners with one out. Leigh was able to get Drew Frederic to hit a grounder to Hubbard to start a double play and escape without giving up a run.
Benton began the bottom of the frame by drawing a walk and would advance to second on a sacrifice bunt from Rodriguez. A wild pitch moved the senior outfielder to third. He would score when Wuthrich sent a 0-1 slider through the left side for the walk-off win.
Next up for the Bobcats is a meeting with nationally ranked Texas A&M at 6:30 p.m. in College Station.

Williams hit a 1-0 offering hard at the second baseman, who decided to go to second for the final out of the frame but the shortstop was slow to cover the bag as Benton slide in safely and allow a run to score to increase the advantage to 2-0.
The lead was short lived as Dalton Sinquefield doubled down the left field line to tie the game.
Hubbard put TXST back in front when he smashed a 2-0 offering over the left field netting and onto the softball field for his fourth homer of the season.

The ball rolled all the way to the wall to allow the sophomore infielder to record his second triple of the season and cut the deficit to two.
Shuffield began the bottom of the ninth off with a single to right field. He would move up to second when Ryan Newman grounded out to first. On the first pitch he saw, Peyton Lewis laced a single to center that brought Shuffield home to make it a one-run game. However, that would be as close as the Bobcats would get as Hixon go the next two batters out to end the contest.
On the mound, Hunter McMahon (4-3) struck out six in 6.1 innings but gave up six runs on six hits to take the loss. Zack Lightsey (1-0) earned the win after going 2.1 innings and surrendering a run on one hit and five walks. Hixon earned his third save and second of the day after working the final 1.1 innings.
