SAN MARCOS – The City of San Marcos hosted the Mermaid Month kickoff event on Wednesday, September 1, at the San Marcos Rec Hall to celebrate the City’s recent designation as the Mermaid Capital of Texas.
The event leads up to the 2021 Mermaid Capital of Texas Fest, which was proclaimed a signature celebration for the City of San Marcos by Mayor Jane Hughson on August 17.
The festival includes an Aquamaid Scavenger Hunt, the Mermaid Promenade and the Downtown Street Faire which will take place on September 25. Event information may be found online at mermaidsocietysmtx.com.
Due to health concerns regarding Covid-19 and the delta variant, the Mermaid Society chose to cancel all other Mermaid Society annual events that posed health risks due to indoor or closed space settings.
According to their website, the events postponed until 2022 are the following: Mermaid Society Art Ball, MERtini Shakedown Competition, Siren Run & Splash, Aqua Faire, AquaMade Runway & Brunch and in-person River Guardianship Symposium and Arts, Culture & Preservation Symposium. Our team is discussing the option of creating a virtual symposium for both events.
There are several mermaid-themed events still taking place throughout the month of September. Ideas that celebrate the City’s arts, culture, heritage, and responsibility to protect natural resources include:
Ahead of Mermaid Month, the City created an identity piece that is available for free to individuals and businesses interested in promoting the Mermaid Capital of Texas designation. The image may be used on any material and may be accessed at www.visitsanmarcos.com/mermaidcapital.
