FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 6th, 2016
The San Marcos, Texas Mermaid Society SMTX held their City Proclamation September 6th, 2016 proclaiming the month of September “All things San Marcos, S.P.L.A.S.H (Stewardship Preservation Local Arts Sustainability Heritage). In celebration of International Mermaid Day, the Mermaid Society SMTX recognizes September 6th, as the kick off to the Inaugural Mermaid Fest and will celebrate from this day forward in the month of September. Present during the Proclamation were some of the former Aquamaids which included one of the Founding Members Shirley Rogers, as well as Presenting Sponsor Chuck Nash Auto Group, several of the supporting community members, Texas State Students, and local businesses.
Many locals and visitors of San Marcos may remember as early as the 50’s growing up and going to the Aquarena Springs Amusement Park which was closed in 1996. Since then the center has become the ecological education focused Meadows Center For Water and the Environment. Specific to Aquarena are the famous Aquamaids, which is why San Marcos is able to proclaim her as a guardian and bring the Mermaid back from lasting memories of Aquarena. The Mermaid champions the embodiment of our vibrant San Marcos community. Her image is meant to serve as a symbol for our city to remind all to respect and protect the natural beauty and resources of our river for generations to come.
As a tribute the Mermaid Society is hosting a number of events and celebrations during the next few weeks.
The Mermaid Society SMTX is a grassroots community, committed to strengthening connectivity among likespirited community partners to work creatively and collaboratively towards a shared vision in support of the arts, river stewardship, historic preservation and a local living economy.
