Staff Reports
The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter accepted a very generous donation of $15,000 from Mutt Strutt San Marcos on Monday, July 8.
The shelter will spend $3,100 to replenish and replace office supplies that were thrown out after the Feline Panleukopenia outbreak, $5,000 will go to vet services for heartworm treatments as well as extra medical expenses incurred due to the Panleukopenia outbreak, and another $5,000 will be used to purchase cat condos. Any remaining funds will go towards addressing immediate needs.
In June, the animal shelter closed cat adoptions due to the outbreak.
Shelter staff suspects the virus initially began with a mom and kittens that were brought into the shelter showing symptoms of an upper respiratory infection, which dramatically changed throughout their stay. Since then, staff believes other cats have come into the shelter that was exposed before their arrival.
The shelter vaccinates all animals within 2-24 hours of intake. However, due to the number of kittens surrendered to the shelter, and lack of space, some kittens were moved from the isolation room into other parts of the shelter before the Shelter’s Vet Services team had an opportunity to vaccinate them.
Panleukopenia is fatal for kittens and cats with compromised immune systems.
According to the city of San Marcos, Mutt Strutt is a key partner to the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter, raising funds that directly support animal adoptions, medical treatments, shelter equipment and so much more. Contributions can be made year-round at www.muttstrutt.org.
