News From Hays County Sheriff’s Office On Jail Inspection, More

Sheriff Gary Cutler announced last week that after two days of an in-depth audit by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards that the Hays County Jail and the Government Center detention center passed the inspection with an almost perfect score.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, TCJS Inspector Jennifer Shumake told Cutler and the jail command staff, “I have never had an inspection that came this close to perfect, ever.”

The only minor item found was that the jail showers needed to be renovated, but Shumake said that she saw that it was already identified as a problem and that it was already scheduled to be done during the upcoming renovations.

She also reported that there were very few complaints when she interviewed random inmates and staff members which is uncommon during other inspections at other facilities.

The inspection reviewed our correctional standards, including security, safety, training, current staffing levels, cleanliness and staff, inmate, and administrative relations.

TCJS Inspector Mike Gravitt stated to Cutler and Commissioner Walt Smith that he would have loved to have worked with such a dedicated and hardworking staff like the ones at the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.

Culter said couldn’t be prouder of all the men and women who work so hard to get our jail to meet even higher standards than are required by the state.

Hays County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Graduates From LEMIT

Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler congratulated and acknowledged Lt., Joe Faulkner, last week who recently graduated from the Leadership Command College – Class 87 of the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas (LEMIT).

The program, taught by several universities throughout Texas, provides law enforcement administrators and executives with the skills necessary to effectively manage police agencies and deliver a high level of service to their communities.

Module I, focusing on leadership, is taught at the Center for Executive Development at Texas A&M University. Module II, at Texas Woman’s University, focuses on the political, legal, and social environment of law enforcement.

The program concluded on October 1, 2020, with training in law enforcement administration at the third module, held at Sam Houston State University.

Each of the three 3-week modules attended by participants in the program is taught by top national and international law enforcement experts.

Topics include leadership, professional ethics and integrity, communication, and personnel management issues.

According to the Sheriff’s office, the Command College curriculum also strives to keep participants on top of contemporary issues in Criminal Justice. Lt. Faulkner began his career with the Hays County Sheriff’s Office in 1997 as a corrections officer.

Sheriff Culter stated, “for 23 years, Lt. Faulkner has selflessly served the citizens of Hays County, and we are proud to have him here at the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.”

Basic Corrections Officer Class 17 Graduates With 100% Pass Rate

Sheriff Gary Cutler congratulated cadet class number 17 for their 100% passing rate of the TCJS-Basic Corrections Officer Course.

Texas Commission on Jail Standards mandates all corrections officers within one year of employment complete and successfully pass this course to receive their certified Jailers License.

The course consists of 120 hours of classroom training in methods consisting of inmate rights, intake procedures, de-escalation, mental health, etc.

Additional training includes 32 hours of a wide range of topics to include Introduction to Direct Supervision.
